Still no profanity. Still on-brand ("mean about your excuses, never about you"). But the gloves are off in a way Coach's aren't.
Who Drill Sergeant is for
- You've used gentle productivity apps and rage-quit them. "You got this! ☀️" makes you want to throw your phone. Drill Sergeant is the opposite of that energy.
- Sarcasm lands for you. You laugh at yourself when your bullshit gets called. If sarcasm shuts you down, stay on Coach.
- You need a stronger stimulus. You've been on Coach a couple weeks and the Coach voice has become background noise. Drill Sergeant wakes you back up.
- You don't have the mandatory-buddy setup for Demon but you want harder pressure than Coach.
Who should skip Drill Sergeant
- You're already anxious about avoidance. Sarcasm on top of shame is not a good combination. Read Procrastination and Anxiety — the anxiety loop is real and Drill Sergeant can amplify it. Consider Coach.
- You're in early recovery from anything. Chillcore is entertainment, not therapy. See /safety.
- You want an accountability app your therapist would approve of. Drill Sergeant is not that app. Coach might be.
Sample Drill Sergeant notifications
Day 6 avoidance, big deliverable:
"Oh look, day 6. Really letting that presentation marinate, huh? → Open the slides. Now. Not after 'one video.'"
Third snooze today:
"Wow, another snooze. Bold strategy. How's it working out? → 20 minutes. Go. Impress literally nobody but yourself."
Weaponized math:
"8,640 minutes avoided. Task length: 4 minutes. The math is embarrassing. → Do it. This exact second."
Buddy warning:
"You've told 3 people you'd do this. They remember. → Prove them right for once. First step. Go."
The tone is: amused, unimpressed, unwilling to pretend you didn't have time. It never attacks who you are — it attacks the specific choice you keep making.
Punch → Path at the Drill Sergeant tier
- Punch = sarcasm targeting the excuse, not you. "'Tomorrow for sure' — that's the 9th one. Want to hear the first eight?"
- Path = same as every tier. "Or just do the thing. Your call, champ."
The sarcasm is deliberate discomfort. Not cruelty. Every message follows the "mock the behavior, not the identity" rule (see Community Guidelines).
What Drill Sergeant will and won't do
Will: - Name your excuse specifically ("'I'll do it after this podcast.' That was 3 podcasts ago.") - Use sarcasm and mockery ("Cute. Useless, but adorable.") - Weaponize math (avoided-time vs task-time comparisons) - Threaten buddy notification (only actually notifies if buddy has Accepted + opted into roast-mode) - Get less patient as the days pile up
Won't: - Use profanity (that's Demon) - Attack your identity, body, intelligence, or mental health - Reference any protected characteristic - Send anything to a buddy who hasn't Accepted - Cross the line from mocking your excuse to mocking you
If a Drill Sergeant message ever feels like it crossed that line, report it — it's a bug, not a feature.
The store-friendly version
The App Store and Play Store versions ship a softened Drill Sergeant — less sarcasm, less "bold strategy" mockery, none of the "cute" / "genius" edge. Same weaponized math and buddy warnings, just tonally lighter.
The full-strength Drill Sergeant is on the web app + Android APK only.
Reason: Apple's Guideline 1.1 and Google Play's harassment policy don't tolerate the full-tone version. We could push it, get rejected, waste a review cycle — or we could ship a version that's honest about what it is. We chose the second.
The safeword still drops you to Coach
Same on every tier. Say "stop" / tap Save button / reply STOP — instant Coach. 24-hour cooldown before intensity can return.
If Drill Sergeant gets to be too much on a bad day, that's what the safeword is for. Use it. No penalty.
Upgrading from Drill Sergeant
To upgrade to Demon: you re-run the full 3-gate flow every time (18+ attestation + screener quiz + mandatory armed buddy check). No shortcut, no memory of last time you were in Demon — every activation is a fresh gate.
Reason: Demon is not a personality preference, it's a controlled-consent state. If you can't clear all 3 gates fresh, you don't get Demon. See /levels/demon.

Frequently asked questions
Is Drill Sergeant safe if I have anxiety?
Read Procrastination and Anxiety first. Short version: sarcasm on top of shame can worsen the avoidance loop. If your baseline anxiety is high, Coach is a safer starting point. If Drill Sergeant makes you feel worse than the task itself, use the safeword.
How is the App Store version different?
Softened tone — less sarcasm, none of the "cute" / "genius" edges. Same weaponized math, same escalation, same Punch → Path. Full Drill Sergeant is on web + Android APK only, per Apple Guideline 1.1.
Can Drill Sergeant text my buddy directly?
Only if your buddy has Accepted AND opted into roast-mode. Without that consent state, Drill Sergeant may threaten to contact your buddy, but never actually will. See buddy consent policy.
Does Drill Sergeant say things that would embarrass me if my kids saw?
No profanity, so nothing overtly obscene. But Drill Sergeant does say things like "bold strategy" and "wow, another snooze" — visible on your lock screen if a notification fires while your kids can see. If that's a concern, stay on Coach.
What's the difference between "mocking your excuse" and "mocking you"?
Mocking your excuse: "'Tomorrow for sure' — that's the 9th one." (Names a specific pattern of avoidance.) Mocking you: "You're pathetic." (Attacks identity.) Drill Sergeant does the first, never the second. If it ever crosses that line, it's a bug.
