Feature

The Buddy System

Someone else's eyes on your work — the accountability layer that beats going solo.

The buddy system is Chillcore's core "external accountability" feature. Invite a friend. They Accept (or don't — no messages reach them until they explicitly consent). Once armed, they see your escalation reports and can send you canned roasts, texts, or "one more day" grace tokens.

Optional on Coach and Drill Sergeant. Mandatory on Demon.

Why buddies matter

Research on accountability (Focusmate's internal data, Cialdini's commitment/consistency work, and 20+ years of behavioral studies on public vs private commitment) converges on one finding:

The presence of another human noticing your commitment increases follow-through by 2-3x.

Not because your buddy has magic powers. Because humans behave differently when someone is watching. This is the same mechanism that makes body-doubling work on Focusmate, that makes group fitness classes stickier than solo workouts, that makes public commitment (Cialdini) more binding than private commitment.

Chillcore's buddy system is app-mediated body-doubling with escalation.

Nothing reaches your buddy before they explicitly tap Accept. No exceptions.

This is not a courtesy — it's a legal + product constraint that predates every other feature.

  • Invite email — a single, neutral message explaining what accepting means. Nothing else follows unless they Accept.
  • 14-day silence — treated as an implicit decline. Their address is purged from our system.
  • Explicit Decline — same as silence, plus their email goes on a global suppression list. No other Chillcore user can invite them again.

This design exists to comply with TCPA (US telemarketing), CAN-SPAM (US email), GDPR (EU data), and Latvian data protection law — but honestly, we'd do it regardless. Ambushing strangers with insulting emails from a stranger's accountability app is the wrong thing to do.

The 3 buddy paths

Path 1 — Friend without the app

They get ONE email. It says: - What Chillcore is (one line) - What accepting means (they'll see your escalation reports; they can respond with canned roasts or text messages; they can revoke any time) - Big Accept and Decline buttons

Nothing else reaches them until they Accept.

Path 2 — Friend already on Chillcore

They get an in-app pairing request. Full interaction unlocks immediately if they Accept: mutual roasts, canned reply buttons ("Roast him," "One more day," "I'm disappointed"), shared streak visibility.

Path 3 — No buddy

You can use Chillcore solo on Coach and Drill Sergeant. The app will nag you periodically to add a buddy (it's genuinely more effective with one). Demon requires a buddy — no solo Demon.

Per-task pairing

Buddies are assigned per task or per category, not globally.

  • Gym bro sees your gym tasks.
  • Business partner sees your work tasks.
  • Spouse sees your household tasks.

You choose the granularity. Any buddy can be assigned to multiple task categories.

This design prevents accidental context-collapse: your business partner does not need to know you've been avoiding a dentist call for 9 days.

What your buddy sees + can do

Once armed, a buddy can see (per shared task): - Task title (only if you explicitly enable this — default is "aggregate stats only") - Days you've been avoiding - Escalation state (normal / warning / punishment) - Completion or quit events - Streak status

Your buddy can: - Send canned roasts — one-tap messages ("Roast him," "You know better," "I'm disappointed") - Send text messages — free-form, still passes through Chillcore's safety filter - Grant Grace tokens — one snooze without interrogation (limited per week) - Confirm your quit-gate — for the Heavy tier video confession, buddy sees the recording

Your buddy CANNOT: - See your typed excuses - See your quit-gate confessions (except Heavy-tier) - See your safeword usage - See your other buddies - Change your level or settings - Access your billing

Buddy revocation — instant

If your buddy taps Revoke at any time: - Their access is removed within milliseconds. - They are added to the global suppression list. - If you were in Demon mode, you auto-downgrade to Drill Sergeant. - You receive a push notification about the change. - They receive no further messages, ever.

Buddies can also Pause (48-hour break) without a full revocation. Pause is designed for "I'm on vacation, don't page me" situations.

Buddy notifications — what fires when

Chillcore fires messages to your buddy on these events (all pre-armed at task creation, so nothing is a surprise):

Event Fires
You complete a task "Buddy Flip Positive" — "They did it. Feel free to act surprised."
You quit a task Wall event with your typed reason
You hit day 3 of avoidance Escalation warning
You hit day 6 of avoidance Escalation report + optional canned roast prompt
You use the safeword NEVER — safeword usage is between you and Chillcore
You trigger the crisis off-ramp NEVER — crisis events are not buddy-notified

Full transparency: your buddy gets a list of exactly what triggers a notification, and can mute individual event types on their end.

Buddy for Demon mode (mandatory)

Demon is the only tier that requires an armed buddy. Rules:

  • Buddy must be 18+.
  • Buddy must have Accepted the pairing.
  • Buddy must have opted into roast-mode (a separate consent step beyond basic pairing).
  • Buddy must NOT be paused.

If any of these fail at any time, Demon auto-downgrades to Drill Sergeant and you get a push. There is no orphan Demon.

This is intentional. Demon is the tier where Chillcore's language becomes hardest to argue with. Having an armed adult buddy as an external check is the design guardrail — you can't be alone in Demon.

What we don't do with buddy data

  • We don't sell buddy addresses. They're stored only for the pairing.
  • We don't scan your contacts. We never have access to your address book.
  • We don't market to buddies. They get the ONE invite email; no follow-ups, no newsletters.
  • We don't share buddy data cross-account. If you and your buddy each have Chillcore accounts, our system knows about the pairing but never uses buddy data to affect the other's account.
  • We don't retain revoked buddy data beyond the global suppression list (email only, no other identifying data).

Frequently asked questions

Can I have more than one buddy?

Yes. Chillcore supports multiple buddies, each paired to different tasks or task categories. Recommended: 2-3 buddies max. More than that and coordination overhead exceeds accountability benefit.

What if my buddy is also on Chillcore — do we get discounts?

No paired discounts currently. Both pay their normal Pro rate. Chillcore is single-seat pricing; the buddy relationship is a mutual accountability contract, not a subscription-sharing arrangement.

Can my buddy see how much I paid Chillcore?

No. Buddies never see billing, subscription tier, or payment status.

What if my buddy is abusive?

Revoke immediately (Settings → Buddies → Revoke). They're added to global suppression. Report to safety@chillcore.app if their behavior violated our Community Guidelines — we take these reports seriously.

Can I use Chillcore without a buddy?

Yes on Coach and Drill Sergeant. No on Demon. See /levels/demon for why.

What about kids under 18 as buddies?

No. Buddies must be 13+ for any tier (per COPPA), and 18+ for Demon. If a buddy invite is Accepted and later found to be by a minor, we terminate the pairing.
