Coach is not the "gentle" tier. It's the one you can send to your grandma. It's still Chillcore — it still names the excuse, still counts the days, still refuses to let you close a task without proof.
Who Coach is for
- You're new to Chillcore. Start here regardless of your self-perception. If Coach feels too soft after a week, upgrade to Drill Sergeant.
- Profanity is a dealbreaker. You want the accountability, not the vulgarity.
- You're in a shared context — kids in the house, phone visible at work, meetings where notifications show on screen.
- You've tried mocking accountability apps and shut down. If sarcasm makes you rage-quit, Coach is the ceiling that keeps you engaged.
- You want an App Store or Play Store install. Coach is the tier that ships in both stores (Drill Sergeant ships softened; Demon is web/APK only).
Who should skip Coach
- You've used gentle productivity apps and bounced. If "here's your daily reminder!" makes you delete apps, Coach probably won't stick either. Try Drill Sergeant.
- You want to be actively mocked. Coach doesn't mock. It just refuses to drop the subject.
Sample Coach notifications
These fire based on your actual task, days avoided, and time-of-day. Personalized, not templated.
Day 4 stall — big scary task:
"Day 4 on the tax file. It's not getting smaller. → Open the folder. Just the folder. I'll check in 10."
Third snooze today:
"Three snoozes today. That's a decision, not an accident. → Do the first step only. Reply when it's open."
Deadline approaching, unstarted:
"You've got 2 days. Panic later is worse than effort now. → 25 minutes, right now. I'll time it with you."
Coach doesn't guilt-trip. It quotes your own words back to you. It names the pattern. It gives you a specific next step. And then — if you do the step — it goes quiet.
Punch → Path at the Coach tier
Every Coach message has two beats:
- Punch = firm, factual, unshakeable. "You said 'this week.' It's Thursday." No name-calling, no sarcasm — just the fact.
- Path = concrete next action + when. "Block 20 minutes now. Put it in the calendar before you close this."
Coach's punch is the softest of the three tiers. Coach's path is identical to Drill Sergeant's and Demon's. The tactical rigor never softens.
What Coach won't do
Coach mode is bounded by strict content rules: - No profanity. - No sarcasm. - No name-calling ("lazy," "pathetic," "coward" all forbidden). - No mockery of your excuses (naming ≠ mocking). - No aggressive framing (no "you're being weak" or "man up").
If you want any of that: upgrade to Drill Sergeant or Demon.
The safeword still works
Even though Coach doesn't roast, the safeword is still available. Say "stop" (voice), tap Save button (in-app), or reply STOP — Chillcore pauses all notifications for 24 hours.
Nobody uses the safeword on Coach. If you do, the app takes it seriously as a signal that even Coach is too much right now.
Coach availability
Coach ships everywhere:
| Platform | Coach available? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| chillcore.app (PWA) | Yes | Full version |
| iOS (via Add to Home Screen) | Yes | Push notifications require Add to Home Screen |
| Android APK | Yes | Full version |
| Play Store | Yes (planned launch) | Tamed build |
| App Store | Yes (planned launch) | Tamed build |
Free tier includes Coach + 2 active tasks + no buddy. See pricing.
Upgrading from Coach
Any time. Tap Settings → Level → Drill Sergeant. 24-hour cooldown if you've downgraded recently (prevents impulse escalation).
Recommended: spend at least 2 weeks on Coach before you consider upgrading. Coach is the tier that will teach you what your actual avoidance patterns look like. Drill Sergeant only helps if the specific-firm approach has stopped moving you.

Frequently asked questions
Is Coach mode free?
Yes. The free tier includes Coach + 2 active tasks + no buddy. Pro ($9.99/mo or $79/year) unlocks all levels, 5 tasks, buddy connection, Earned Silence, and everything else. Pricing.
Can I use a buddy on Coach?
Yes if you're on Pro. Buddy is optional on Coach and Drill Sergeant; it's mandatory only on Demon. See /features/buddies.
Does Coach send fewer notifications than Drill Sergeant?
No — same volume, same escalation curve. Same number of nags, same random check-ins, same deadline pressure. What changes is the tone of each notification, not the frequency.
Will Coach ever say something that hurts my feelings?
It will name patterns you'd rather not see. "Three snoozes today. That's a decision." That can sting. It won't call you names, mock you, or attack who you are.
Can I customize Coach's tone?
Not currently. Coach has one voice — firm, factual, no frills. A future Persona Store will let you swap the voice (Disappointed Grandma, etc.) while staying at the Coach intensity floor.
