The problem with productivity rewards
Every gamified productivity app rewards you with the same thing: more app.
Streaks. Badges. XP. Character levels. Duolingo-style guilt-tinged notifications when you skip a day. The reward for using the app is a stronger tether to the app.
This is a business model choice, not a user benefit. Retention metrics love streaks; your attention span does not.
Chillcore inverts the logic: the reward for finishing a hard task is that Chillcore leaves you alone. No notifications for 1, 2, or 3 days depending on how hard the task was. Full silence. No badge to check. No streak to maintain. Nothing.
Peace is the ultimate currency in 2026. Every other app in your notification tray is trying to capture more of you. Chillcore's reward is giving you back your afternoon.
How Earned Silence works
Trigger: you complete a task and successfully close the quit-gate (proof: photo, screenshot, video, or typed confession).
Duration is calculated from three factors: - Task difficulty (Quick Kill, Beast, or Grind) - Days you avoided before finishing - Level (Coach / Drill Sergeant / Demon)

During Earned Silence, Chillcore sends zero notifications. Push notifications are paused. Badge count is cleared. Email digests are suppressed.
The only exceptions: safety-critical messages (crisis off-ramp trigger) and account-level messages (payment failed, buddy revoked pairing).
What you can still do during Earned Silence
- Add new tasks. Silence pauses reminders, not the app itself.
- Complete other tasks. Yes, this stacks Earned Silence.
- Talk to your buddy. Buddy interactions still work; they just don't page you.
- View your Wall, streaks, stats. All still visible when you open the app voluntarily.
Earned Silence pauses outbound Chillcore pings — it doesn't hide the app or restrict features.
What breaks Earned Silence
- Adding a task with a hard deadline that falls inside the silence window. Chillcore will notify you when the deadline approaches, silence or not.
- Quitting a task. Quits fire immediately regardless of silence.
- A buddy sending you a direct roast (they see a warning that you're in Earned Silence; they can override if they choose to).
- Safety-critical events (crisis off-ramp, account security).
You can also manually end Earned Silence if you want reminders back on. Settings → Silence → End Now. No penalty.
Why silence works as a reward
Behavioral economics has a name for this: negative reinforcement done ethically.
Most negative reinforcement is coercive (threats, penalties). Chillcore's negative reinforcement is voluntary: you signed up for the app to nag you, you finish the task, and the nagging stops. The absence of the aversive stimulus (notifications) is the reward.
This is the same mechanism that makes headache-medicine ads work. You are not selling the pleasant sensation of not-having-a-headache — you are selling the removal of an aversive stimulus. That's a stronger motivator than pleasant-stimulus rewards for people whose baseline is already stressful.
For a user who has been getting personalized roasts about how they've been avoiding a task for 9 days — 3 days of complete silence is enormously rewarding. Nothing an XP bar or a badge could offer competes.
What Earned Silence is NOT
- Not a subscription pause. You still pay for Pro during silence.
- Not a "do not disturb" mode. DND is user-configured across all apps. Earned Silence is Chillcore-specific and requires you to have earned it via task completion.
- Not a "streak reset." Your streaks and points persist through silence.
- Not endless. Maximum single silence period is 72 hours. If you want longer, you have to earn it again.
- Not a way to game the system. Earned Silence requires quit-gate proof. You cannot fake a task completion to trigger silence.
Stacking + edge cases
Stacking: completing two tasks during a Silence period extends it (up to the 72-hour cap). Complete a third and it re-triggers.
Interrupted silence: if a Silence period is broken by a hard-deadline notification, the remainder of the period is preserved and resumes automatically after 15 minutes.
Grind tasks: Grind (recurring habit) tasks earn Silence only on full-week completion, not per-day. Chillcore is not going to give you silence for meditating one day; it will for hitting the full week.
Coming soon — Silence extensions
We're testing whether users want the option to spend Grace Tokens to extend Silence periods. Preliminary read: users like the option but rarely use it — Silence already feels abundant when earned.
Not on the immediate roadmap: buyable Silence (paying money to skip a Chillcore session). That would break the incentive structure. Silence is earned, not bought.

Can I trigger Earned Silence manually without completing a task?
No. Silence must be earned. If you want reminders paused temporarily, use your device's Do Not Disturb — that's the right tool for "I want quiet without earning it."
Does Earned Silence work on the free tier?
No. Free tier is Coach + 2 tasks + no buddy + no Silence. Silence is a Pro feature.
What if I earn Silence but need Chillcore to nag me about a new emergency task?
Add the task with a hard deadline that falls inside the silence window. Chillcore will notify you when the deadline approaches — Silence doesn't apply to deadline-critical events.
Do buddies see when I'm in Silence?
Yes. When they try to send you a direct roast, they see "You're in Earned Silence for [X] more hours — send anyway?" prompt. They can override, but it's on them.
Does Silence apply to voice notifications (when they ship)? Yes. All outbound Chillcore contact pauses — push, email digest, voice notification, in-app banner. **Can I gift Silence to a buddy?
No. Silence is earned by you, for you. If you want to be nice to your buddy, send them a Grace Token (they'll like it).
