The Wall

Every task you quit gets a tombstone with a date. It doesn't come back to life. You have to look at it.

The Wall is Chillcore's record of what you didn't do — the counterweight to the Victory Wall (completed tasks). It's UX-permanent within your account. The data is fully erasable anytime (GDPR/CCPA compliant — see Privacy Policy).

Why the Wall exists

Most productivity apps let you delete a task quietly. You give up, you tap delete, the task disappears, and there's no evidence you ever considered it.

That behavior is a feature — for the app's retention metrics. It's a bug for you.

The Wall makes quitting visible. Every quit is a timestamped tombstone with: - Task title - Date created - Date quit - Days you had it open - Your typed reason for quitting - Which quit-gate tier it triggered

You can browse the Wall. You can filter by month or year. You can see the accumulating pattern of what you tend to abandon.

What you cannot do: un-quit a task and pretend it didn't happen. If you want to try the same task again, you add it fresh — and Chillcore may quote your prior excuses back to you as it escalates.

The Wall is UX-permanent. The data is not.

This is important, so it gets its own paragraph.

Within your Chillcore account, the Wall is designed to stay visible. Tombstones don't decay, don't auto-archive, don't fade. You'll see January's quits in December.

Your data is fully erasable through two mechanisms:

  • Records-only erase — wipes the entire Wall log, quit reasons, roast history, task history. Keeps your account, settings, and paired buddies intact. Instant.
  • Full account deletion — wipes everything. 30-day propagation window. Payment records retained 7 years (legal requirement, not our choice).

Both options available under Settings → Privacy → Data. Full details: /legal/privacy.

Why the distinction matters: - The Wall's design is UX-permanent because avoidance patterns that disappear from view stop teaching you anything. - Your data rights are non-negotiable — you can delete everything, anytime, and we do it. That's the law (GDPR Art. 17, CCPA §1798.105) and it's also our design principle.

The two coexist. The Wall is permanent until you decide it isn't.

What ends up on the Wall

Every quit event creates a tombstone, regardless of tier:

  • Quick Kill quit after 2 days → tombstone
  • Beast task quit after 3 weeks of micro-steps → tombstone
  • Grind (recurring habit) abandoned mid-streak → tombstone
  • Task expired at deadline unfinished → "Dead Task" tombstone (distinct icon)

Tombstones are timestamped, categorized, and (if you enabled buddy visibility) shared with your assigned buddy for that task.

What doesn't end up on the Wall

  • Completions go on the Victory Wall (a separate, celebratory surface).
  • Safeword usage is between you and Chillcore — never Wall'd.
  • Crisis off-ramp events are private, never Wall'd, never buddy-notified.
  • Tasks you never created — obviously. The Wall only records what you started.
  • Downgrade events (moving from Demon to Coach) are settings changes, not quits.

Reading the Wall — patterns worth noticing

The Wall is only useful if you look at it. Recommended pattern:

Monthly review (10 minutes): 1. Open the Wall, filter by last 30 days. 2. Look at the categories of tasks you quit — are they mostly one type (household? work? health? communication)? 3. Look at the days-open average — do you quit at day 3, day 7, day 14? 4. Look at your typed reasons — is there a repeating excuse? 5. Compare to Victory Wall — what task types do you actually finish?

If a category shows up repeatedly on the Wall and rarely on the Victory Wall, that category needs different structure. Maybe it needs a buddy who cares about that category. Maybe it needs a smaller task decomposition. Maybe it's a task type Chillcore isn't the right tool for.

The Wall is not for wallowing. It's data.

Grim by design (but not cruel)

The Wall's visual language is deliberately somber:

  • Tombstone-shaped cards (not "task cards")
  • Muted color palette (level-adaptive, but always desaturated)
  • No animations, no celebrations
  • Sequential display — no algorithmic re-ranking that might hide older quits

This is design tension by intent. The Victory Wall is bright, celebratory, gamified. The Wall is not. The visual contrast is part of what makes finishing feel different from quitting.

It is not cruel. No tombstone says "you failed." Tombstones say "quit on [date]" with your typed reason. Facts, not judgments. If a Wall tombstone ever crossed from factual to cruel, that's a bug — report it.

The Wall and your buddy

If your buddy is assigned to a task and you quit it: - Buddy sees the quit event in real-time. - Buddy sees your typed reason (unless you disabled reason-sharing in per-pairing settings). - Buddy can send you a canned "I'm disappointed" message.

Buddy CANNOT: - Send unsolicited messages beyond the canned response set. - See your entire Wall history unless you explicitly share it (Settings → Sharing → Wall Access). - Comment on individual tombstones publicly.

Your Wall is yours. Buddy visibility is per-task, opt-in for full-Wall access.

Dead Tasks (special case)

If a task with a hard deadline passes the deadline without completion, it's marked Dead Task — a special tombstone type distinct from voluntary quits.

Dead Task tombstones: - Have a skull icon instead of a tombstone - Include the original deadline date - Include Chillcore's final message before deadline expiration - Trigger a specific "post-mortem" prompt: "This deadline passed. Anything to say to future-you?"

Your response goes on the tombstone. Future tasks with similar characteristics may quote it back.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide the Wall?

Not fully — the Wall is a core surface. You can collapse it to a small summary tile if you don't want to see it prominently. Settings → Display → Wall Prominence.

What if my buddy uses the Wall to shame me?

That crosses our Community Guidelines line. Report to safety@chillcore.app. We take buddy-abuse reports seriously; repeat offenders are removed from the platform.

Can I export my Wall data?

Yes. Settings → Privacy → Data Export produces a machine-readable JSON/CSV of your entire account, including the Wall. GDPR Art. 20 (right to portability).

What happens to my Wall if I cancel Pro?

It stays intact. You can still view it on Coach + free tier. New tombstones stop accruing at your task cap (2 tasks on free tier), but historical Wall entries persist.

Does the Wall affect my "productivity score" somewhere?

No. Chillcore does not have a productivity score. We don't rank users, don't leaderboard, don't compare you to other users. Your Wall is your data. Full stop.

Can I delete a single tombstone?

No. Individual-tombstone deletion would break the "quit is visible" design principle. You can erase your whole Wall at once (Records-Only Erase), but not cherry-pick embarrassing individual entries. That's on purpose.
